Week of 3/31/25 - 4/4/25

Teachers Corner: Parents please ensure that you and your scholar are checking and completing assignments on their agenda every night including weekends. We will continue to assign infractions, once 3 of the same kind of infractions have been accumulated they will miss their house meeting on Friday. We will also continue to work with your scholar on rules, procedures, expectations, and transitions. Please also ensure your scholar is in uniform everyday. Patches should be on the left sleeve of shirts and sweaters. If you need additional patches, they are available for $2 at the front lobby. 

Additional Reminders:

Please help us in reminding scholars to visit the Lost & Found in case they are missing anything such as water bottles, winter coats and sweaters. Lunch times, recess, and dismissal are great opportunities for scholars to visit the Lost & Found. 

If your scholar has brought home a Core Knowledge reader for either science or history, please help us ensure they are bringing it with them to school each day. Core Knowledge student readers are available to download online at no cost. 

Math: This week scholars will explore converting customary and metric units of measurement. There will be a quiz on data analysis on Monday 4/7.

Science:  This week, scholars will review organism adaptations and behavior in preparation for their quiz on Tuesday, 4/1.

History: This week the scholars will continue learning about the events of the Civil War. Specifically, scholars will be learning about the weaknesses of the South, Jefferson Davis, Gettysburg, Gen Sherman and Lee’s surrender to Grant. We will also talk about the effects of the war after it had ended.

Literature: Scholars will continue to read and get to know the Creighton family in Across Five Aprils.

Grammar: Scholars will learn what a Relative Clause is and how to properly identify and diagram in sentences.

Math: This week scholars will continue using input-output tables to graph lines and equations. Students will be able to analyze this information. They will also be able apply this knowledge to real-world situations. Topic 11 Reteach is due 2/27 to help prepare for a Topic 11 test 2/28 (Friday).

Science: Scholars will continue their unit on ecosystems, exploring food webs, human impact on ecosystems and evidence presented by fossils. Scholars will also receive their study guides on Monday 2/24 in preparation for their quiz review next week.  

History: This week the scholars will continue their unit on the Civil War by looking at the circumstances which led to the Civil War taking place. The scholars will have a quiz this week. So, it will be important for scholars to be reviewing their History notes.

Literature: Scholars will continue reading Where the Red Fern Grows while paying attention to the development of the plot. 

Writing: Scholars will learn what an interrogative pronoun is and how to properly identify and diagram in sentences.

Math: This week scholars will begin working with coordinate planes, ending with a quiz over the first 3 sections of Topic 11 on Friday.

Science: This week, scholars will begin exploring ecosystems and their interacting components, including biotic and abiotic factors. 

History: This week the scholars will be moving on to the next unit on the Civil War where we will be starting our discussion of the topic by looking at the differences between the North and the South at the time.

Literature: Scholars will continue reading Where The Red Fern Grows and identifying character traits and plot elements.

Writing: Scholars will write a 6 paragraph Chreia about King Arthur

Math: This week scholars will write and solve problems that reflect real life situations. Students will use mental math, manipulatives, and multiple operations as they write and solve. Topic 10 Reteach and Review will be due Thursday in preparation for Topic 10 Test on Friday.

Science: Scholars will continue exploring fossil fuels and other types of energy, both renewable and nonrenewable. We will review our study guides due on Thursday 2/13 in preparation for our quiz on Friday 2/14.

History: This week the scholars will continue their unit on Westward expansion before the Civil War. Scholars will review their study guide this week in preparation for the unit test.

Literature: Scholars will begin reading Where the Red Fern Grows and starting to identify plot elements of the story.

Writing: Scholars will write a 6 paragraph chreia about King Arthur

Math: This week scholars will  continue multiplying and dividing fractions. They will work on multi-step word problems that involve these skills and finish the unit with a test on Friday.

Science: This week, scholars will continue to explore changes to Earth’s surface, looking at the Rock Cycle and Landforms more closely. They will also receive their study guides on Wednesday 1/22 in preparation for their test on Thursday 1/30. 

History: This week the scholars will continue their unit on Feudal Japan by learning about Japanese art. The scholars will also be learning about the Mongol invasion of Japan, about how the West came into contact with Japan, and about how Japan responded to these events.

Literature: Scholars will continue our read of The Phantom Tollbooth and identify different types of figurative language throughout the story.

Writing: Scholars will learn how to properly identify indirect objects in sentences.

Field Trip 
We are so excited about our field trip this year! Each grade level team of teachers has been combing through field trip options in order to find just the right one that will have a meaningful connection to an aspect of our curriculum.  We are so excited to announce our 5th grade field trip to the Witte Museum this year! This trip will take place on February 6, 2025 from 8:00AM to 1:30PM.

Happy New Year!!!

Math: This week scholars will continue to work with fractions as we learn how to multiply fractions. Next week we will work on dividing fractions.

Science: Scholars will return to Science by looking more closely at the Geosphere, then will begin to explore the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition.

History: This week as we get back from the Winter break, the scholars will start the next semester by learning about Feudal Japan. The scholars will learn about Japanese art and religion and how these were influenced by China and Korea throughout the centuries.

Literature: Scholars will continue our read of The Phantom Tollbooth and identify different types of figurative language throughout the story.

Writing: Scholars will write King Solomon Chreia

Field Trip 
We are so excited about our field trip this year! Math:  This week scholars will continue to work with fractions with unlike denominators. Scholars will have a Quiz on Friday.

Science: Scholars will begin their unit on the Water Cycle, but will go into more depth regarding how the interactions between the Sun and ocean impact weather patterns.

History: This week the scholars will continue to learn about English History. Specifically, we will be looking at the fall of the Spanish Armada, King Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and King James II. There will be a homework assignment on Oliver Cromwell assigned on 12/4 and due 12/5. Scholars’ notebooks will also be checked for the accurate completion of their class notes.

Literature: Scholars will finish reading the Secret Garden and will begin reading The Phantom Tollbooth. Please ensure that scholars have a copy of the Phantom Tollbooth (ISBN: 9780394820378). by Wednesday 12/4. Scholars will begin working to identify different types of figurative language in the story. The scholars Poem “The Road Not Traveled by Robert Frost is due on 12/20.

Writing: This week students will practice using different types of personal pronouns.
